Class 4

Class 4            Year 4/5      Miss Newton

Dear Parent/ Carer,

What we will be doing and why we will be doing it.

The title of this term’s Learning Journey is ‘A Christmas Carol’. This is the theme of our whole-school production, ‘Ebenezer,’ which will be performed at the end of term. Our work in English this term will continue to focus on historical narrative, first through the text we began to look at last term, Street Child, and then through the comparisons which can be made between this and many of Charles Dickens’ texts. Children will have the opportunity to read versions/ extracts of some of his most famous works including, of course, A Christmas Carol.

Our work in History/ Geography will continue to focus on life and the experiences of children during Victorian times. We will also link our work in Art, which this term is focused around decopage, as well as applying the printing skills learnt last term (whilst learning about William Morris), to create Victorian Christmas themed items to purchase at the school’s Christmas Fair.

Science will continue to be taught on a Monday by Mrs Bulgin.

Spellings

Children will receive a list of spellings on a Monday, for which they will be tested on the Friday of that week. Please support your child in learning their spellings and in clarifying the meaning of any unfamiliar words. Children have also be given a set of spelling activities (A ‘spelling menu’) which aim to make the learning of spellings more enjoyable and effective.

Reading

Please try to read with your child regularly at home. Lots of reading is important to help support the children’s learning in all areas of the curriculum. If your child has Lexia, encouraging lots of use of this will also support progress in reading.

Homework

Again this term, homework will be in the form of a ‘menu’ or selection of activities which link with our Learning Journey theme. These activities cover a variety of curriculum areas; children should pick at least three activities to carry out during the term and these should be returned to school every fortnight, on the dates specified on the sheet. From time-to-time, extra activities linked with Maths or Science may also be sent home.

Dear Parent/ Carer,

What we will be doing and why we will be doing it.

The title of this term’s Learning Journey is ‘Parish Workhouse’ where we will be finding out about the lives of children living in Victorian times. We will look at this era more generally to begin with; finding out about the key historical and geographical events during the period. This will provide children with a useful context for our main work in English this term, which is based around the story ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty. Through this text, children with gain a much deeper insight into the lives of children at the time. We will particularly focus on the difference in experiences between children from poorer, and from wealthier backgrounds.

This term in Art, children will be finding out about the Victorian artist William Morris. They will be learning about printing techniques and how these have changed and developed over the years. Children will get lots of opportunities to hone their own printing skills too.

Children will also be learning about electricity as part of their work in Science. They will be finding out about the history and development of electricity as well as looking forward, to find out about newer, greener options and alternatives.

Spellings
