Class 2

    Class 2       Year 1/2            Mrs Irvine-Capel

Dear Parent/ Carer,

What we will be doing and why we will be doing it.

This term the title of our Learning Journey is The Victorians. In History we will be looking at the life of Queen Victoria, and talking about differences between the past and the present. The Victorians enjoyed reading fairy tales, and so we will base our English work around two traditional tales, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. The children will also continue with daily phonics lessons. Our Art lessons will focus on portraits and the work of William Morris.

In Science we will be investigating materials and their different properties, whilst learning the key skills of working like scientists.

In Maths, we will be starting off with number and counting skills, and looking at place value.

The children receive a list of spellings on a Monday and they will be tested on these on the Friday of that week. Please support your child in learning their spellings and in clarifying the meaning of any unfamiliar words. There are lots of fun ways to practise spellings, such as writing the words in lots of different colours and playing snap.

Please try to read with your child regularly at home. Lots of reading is important to help support the children’s learning in all areas of the curriculum. We will aim to change the books two or three times a week. If your child has access to the Lexia program, encouraging lots of use of this will also support progress in reading.

Literacy or Maths will be set on a Wednesday to be handed in the following Monday. If your child completes any extra work please do encourage them to bring it in to show me.
